Decorative panels to be installed on Wyandotte Avenue Bridge
As a part of the Kansas City Convention Center grand ballroom project, a series of illuminated, decorative panels will be installed during the week of April 16 on the east railing of the Wyandotte Avenue Bridge over Interstate 670.
The art installation is intended to engage pedestrians and serve as a visual connection between the Crossroads District and the downtown loop. Alternating panel styles will be featured in the installation. These include a stainless steel mesh design and a frosted Plexiglas design that is laser-etched with an abstract pattern that will be backlit by energy-efficient fluorescent lighting.
In 2006, a selection committee organized by the Downtown Council of Kansas City, Mo., and the Kansas City Chapter of The American Institute of Architects chose the panel design created by the Kansas City-based architect/engineer team of el dorado inc., MK12 and Genesis Structures Inc. The City of Kansas City, Mo., One Percent for Art Program advised the selection committee.
The City, Downtown Council, River Front Heritage Trail, and Missouri Department of Transportation are funding the $233,000 panel system project. Clarkson Construction will install the panels. Clarkson Construction also was responsible for the construction of the new Wyandotte and Central avenue bridges, and the ballroom's platform that spans over I-670.
The completion of the panel installation is planned to coincide with the opening of the Convention Center's new grand ballroom, which is set for April 28.
Construction activity will be done as long as the weather is favorable for such outdoor activity. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution in areas adjacent to active construction sites. Conditions in these areas can change rapidly, which may expose people to unexpected dangerous situations.
