FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 12, 2007

23rd Street Viaduct to close April 16

The 23rd Street Viaduct and American Royal Drive will close April 16 for an $11.2 million project that will allow a full renovation of the structure.

The viaduct and street will remain closed until early October, when they will open for the duration of the American Royal. The viaduct and street will close again from Jan. 2 until Sept. 30, 2008.

During the closure, traffic entering the Central Industrial District will follow Summit Street past 14th Street to Washington Street, traveling north on Washington Street to 12th Street and taking 12th Street west to Genessee Street.

Drivers wishing to bypass the 23rd Street Viaduct will follow Seventh Street south to Southwest Boulevard, travel northeast on Southwest Boulevard to Summit Street and travel north on Summit Street to Avenida Cesar E Chavez.

Age and constant wear have made the repair of the bridge, which extends into the Central Industrial District, a priority.

This project will rehabilitate the 23rd Street Viaduct and American Royal Drive, while removing the Wyoming Street Ramp. The Wyoming Street Ramp was closed April 6. The portion of the bridge over the railroads will be replaced, and repairs and rehabilitation will be undertaken to address wear and tear on the remainder of bridge's superstructure, bearings and substructure.

Construction and repair work is done as long as the weather is favorable for such outdoor activity. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution in areas adjacent to active construction sites. Conditions in these areas can change rapidly, which may expose people to unexpected dangerous situations.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this issue should be directed to Sean Demory, communications specialist in the Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
