Art commission holds quarterly meeting

The Municipal Art Commission will meet to discuss the work of the latest One Percent for Art nominees May 1 at 4 p.m. in the Council Chamber, 26th floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St.

In March, an all-volunteer panel nominated Kansas City artists Rie Egawa and Burgess Zbryk, along with Cambridge, Mass., artists Mags Harries and Lajos Heder, to create art installations for downtown's Power and Light Entertainment District. The two teams were among dozens of artists who submitted work for the project's $450,000 One Percent for Art allotment.

Under a 1986 ordinance, any new building project undertaken by the City of Kansas City, Mo., must allot 1 percent of total design and estimated construction costs to commission a work of art related to the project. The Municipal Art Commission administers the One Percent for Art Program for the City and selects candidates who are then approved by the City Council.

For more information about the One Percent for Art Program and the City's Municipal Art Commission, visit www.kcmo.org/cimo or call Sean Demory, Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.

Note: The commission may hold a closed session to evaluate artists' proposals pursuant to RSMo. Section 610.021(12).
