Work begins on Mohart Multi-purpose Center

To enhance and continue the rich tradition of service to the community, the City of Kansas City, Mo., has begun work on necessary building renovations to the Robert J. Mohart Multi-purpose FOCUS Center, located at 3200 Wayne Ave. The construction is estimated to be complete in October.

The project is estimated to cost $2.3 million and is being funded by the Public Improvements Advisory Committee. The renovations include repair of the heating and cooling system; installation of an elevator and skywalk; renovation of restrooms for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; renovation of the multi-purpose room and kitchen; repair of damaged auditorium floors; enhancement of office lighting; and renovation of the parking lot and exterior entry.

The original building, which is located west of the center at 3201 Flora Ave., was constructed in 1908 and has served as a place of worship, a Masonic temple, and a social services and community center. In 1974, the original building (now known as the west building) was renovated and a new building (known as the east building) was built. The new multi-purpose complex was dedicated at that time as a facility to provide health, recreation, social and other community services.

Tevis Architectural Group designed the project, Orr Construction will complete the renovations and Diggs Construction will provide construction management services.

The Human Services Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department manages the Mohart Center, providing facility management and administrative support services. The center provides a safe, clean, modern facility for community meetings; social, cultural and educational events; and bi-partisan political forums. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
