FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 12, 2006
Rededication ceremony held for Fire Station 23
Representatives from the City of Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department, other City staff and elected officials on Dec. 12 at 1:30 p.m. rededicated the remodeled Fire Station 23 located at 4777 Independence Ave. A symbolic uncoupling of fire hoses and a facility tour followed the brief ceremony.
"This facility has undergone a complete remodel of both the interior and existing building exterior," said Chief Richard "Smokey" Dyer, Fire Department. "These improvements will greatly enhance emergency services for the northeast portion of our city."
Construction of the approximately $4 million project began in September 2005 and was substantially complete in November 2006. The project was funded completely by the quarter-cent sales tax for operation of and capital improvements for the Fire Department. Kansas City voters passed the tax in August 2001.
The Capital Improvements Management Office managed this project. The station was designed by Shaughnessy, Fickel and Scott Architects and constructed by Kraus-Anderson Construction Company.
The remodeled fire station is a 16,042-square-foot, two-story structure with three bays. It was completely remodeled with the renovation of the roof and overhead doors, electrical power, mechanical HVAC and plumbing systems. Other site improvements include the replacement of the parking lot curb and gutter, the replacement of the parking lot fence with a new security fence and gate, and the construction of a new patio and roof. The facility has been updated using durable materials and systems to ensure low maintenance and utility costs.
