Linking to Commercial Web Sites
From the City of Kansas City , MO, Web Site

Purpose

This policy is intended to better support the needs of citizens, city employees and visitors by providing useful information in a more efficient manner.

  • To enhance partnership, community involvement and the exchange of information and ideas between citizens, businesses, visitors and local government.
  • To provide information internally and externally about programs, services and activities provided by the City and leads to helpful programs, services and information that the city cannot provide.

City of Kansas City , Mo. , Policy on Non-Government Information and Links
The City of Kansas City, Mo. may link to commercial Web sites if that site/organization is a partner or sponsor/client with the City on an event and the Internet Policy Oversight Group (IPOG) has reviewed and approved its purpose. If approved, the link is not to exceed the duration of the event without another committee review, unless signed contract/agreement has been made. These outside groups are responsible for their own content (see the Linking Policy below).

Kcmo.org is a portal for information about the City of Kansas City, Mo. The links included within the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s web pages may let you leave the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s web site via linked sites. Links are limited to those that meet our governmental purpose as outlined below. The linked sites are not under the control of the City of Kansas City, Mo. and the City of Kansas City, Mo. is not responsible for the contents of any linked site or any link contained in a linked site, or any changes or updates to such sites. The City of Kansas City, Mo. is not responsible for webcasting or any other form of transmission received from any linked site. The City of Kansas City, Mo. is providing these links only as a convenience, and the inclusion of any link does not imply endorsement by the City of Kansas City, Mo. or any association with their operators.

While the main focus of the City's web site is to provide information to local citizens and businesses, it is also clear that many of the site's users are potential visitors and people exploring business opportunities in our community. We frequently receive tourism and trade-related questions. Since these economic development functions are important to the City, our site seeks to be a broadly based portal of information. Rather than duplicate information provided by others, we may link to that information into our site.

Departments that are especially entrepreneurial, such as Conventions & Entertainment Facilities and Aviation, may find that establishing a way to advertise appropriate non-City entities, including private businesses, supports the department’s mission. When such links are related to the department’s business and are chosen through an appropriate method of selection by the department in conjunction with assistance from the Law Department, commercial links may be appropriate.

The Internet Policy Oversight Group of the City of Kansas City, Mo. makes decisions on what links to include on the City’s web site.

The following are examples allowed on www.kcmo.org:

  • Other governments and educational institutions.
  • Not-for-profit or public organizations that have some relationship to the City, usually contractual.
  • Community councils, organizations, and other similar groups which advance the particular element of the City’s Web site from which the group will be linked.
  • Arts, cultural, sports, major festivals and similar organizations of general interest to Kansas City , Mo. citizens or tourists. Such links are generally to not-for-profit organizations.
  • Employment information within the City of Kansas City, Mo. government.
  • Tourist information, principally from the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Community Calendar information for City-sanctioned or City-sponsored events and also for not-for-profit organizations. Generally, the only information the City will provide on the calendar page is the name/date/time of the event, contact information or links, if applicable.
  • Professional trade organizations that are relevant to our city governments mission.

The following are examples that are generally not allowed on www.kcmo.org:

  • Candidate sites or sites advocating a position on City or other ballot issues.
  • Corporate commercial sites. However, www.kcmo.org may link to some of these sites, if they are a partner or sponsor/client with the City and IPOG has reviewed and approved its purpose.
  • Individual or personal home pages.

Links to the City's Web Site
If you link your page to this Web site, we would appreciate knowing about the link. You can contact the webmaster by e-mail at webmaster@kcmo.org. We prefer that you link only to the first (home) page rather than an interior page. We also ask that if you link to this site, you not frame the city's site in a frameset, giving the impression that your site is actually the Kansas City, Mo., Web site.

Logos on the City of Kansas City, MO, Web Site
Purpose

  • To provide information internally and externally about programs, services and activities provided by the City and leads to helpful programs, services and information that the city cannot provide.

City of Kansas City , Mo., Policy on logos on the City Web Site
The City of Kansas City, Mo., usually allows only City logos on our web site. If the City is hosting or sponsoring a special event, the logo for that event may be posted. Logos for sponsors of that event cannot be posted.

If a company provides significant financial sponsorship for a web page it is permissible to post that company’s logo (not larger than 100 pixels) along with a statement of their sponsorship, based on a prior agreement, and after it has been reviewed by IPOG.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., web site’s purpose is to provide information. Adding logos only supports information in a visual manner. Too many sites are covered with logos and ads where the message can easily get lost.

Approval process for:

  • Any use of a commercial link on www.kcmo.org.
  • Any use of a commercial logo on www.kcmo.org.

Process
Prior to posting any commercial link or logo on www.kcmo.org, an e-mail with supporting information and containing the link and/or logo must be sent to all IPOG members. If a consensus of IPOG members is to approve of the placement of link and/or logo, the process can be completed, by submitting the web page with the link and/or logo.
